December 2019

Community Letter

Date: December 30, 2019

Dear friends and family,
Let me start by saying happy holidays to those who celebrate Gregorian calendar and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020 TO YOU ALL. This GIF (<—-) shows my wish for you along with a thousand good wishes for
 your loved ones!

Did you know that by today, one-third of the world’s power generation is now based on renewable energy? The world is greener than it was 20 years ago according to NASA researchers? The global suicide rate has declined by 29%, preventing the deaths of millions of people since 2000? This actually means something. It means we can do well if we work together. Having my first child on the way, I wish for us —as human beings, to be more good and progressive in the coming decade. Now… let’s review the past December. What a month! So many things have happened.

All of a sudden BBC featured Idea Designers magazine. Iranian Journalist Masoud Behnoud told us about the concept we had in mind from day one, in such a way than we couldn’t tell in that way. This made me so happy because Idea Designers is basically a circle of 5 persons (including me) made by our great Editor Navid Khaasteh. Each of us at the editorial board knows that the magic is in the magazine’s community. It is true that they say “good work is the best publicity”.  See the video here >>
On December 3rd, we also had an “Idea Designers Evening” to gather our readers, authors, and enthusiasts to connect, and also learn from our guest of honor, Mastro Khosrow Sinai who has been on our cover as a “multidisciplinary intellect”. The night was also themed for multidisciplinary individuals. Those who are not appreciated elsewhere, those who drive positive change. I also had the honor to speak about “why innovation is built on a multidisciplinary approach”.
On the TEDxTehran side, not only we have been featured by TED’s Twitter this month, but we did a big thing! Our lead in Women programs, Mehrnoosh Baratpoor (the brilliant future leader you see in the photo), encouraged us to organize the 2nd TEDxTehranWomen on December 13th. Themed Bold+Birilliant, the event gathered over 200 selected audience to watch a live TED session and two talks from their own community. See event photos here>>
While we are on the topic, let me brag about how I was fortunate to be a part of the Women Entrepreneurship Program (WEP) of the Iran-Swiss Chamber of Commerce panel where we discussed “the path to leadership”. Our partnership with the WEB took almost 5 months and we successfully helped the program to expand its network. We are done now and I’m confident with their good leadership, the enablers are now enabled!
We celebrated Yalda with some of you!, Yalda this year was amazing: great music, good food, and amazing conversations in our Servcorp office. It was an amazing evening. These gatherings remind me why I live in Iran. At the Oppmakr Yalda event, I had the chance to connect my partners, friends, and clients together.
eSafar.com is getting ready to go BIG!  We are looking for candidates for CTO and CFO roles. If you are in these fields and great at what you do, here is a chance to get involved. Just reply to this email! Also, another Oppmakr Heroes has been organized but I didn’t receive the photos yet to share with you.

To end this month let me treat you to two gifts that I can share here: My music and my though. You can enjoy my live Spotify playlist which gets you to mood for “Opportunity Making”! I’m serious, just try it!

Also with the help of Nuance podcast, I have released an audio version of my Farsi article on “our craving for shortcuts”. It is available below.

My best as always,
Reza

We have access to so many music tracks that we outsource what we want to hear to machines. The “OPP MOOD” playlist is a gift to anyone looking for my taste of music. Enjoy! Play the “Opp Mood” on Spotify >>

The idea of this article came into my mind in the summer of 2011 when I was watching Alec Baldwin‘s movie Shortcut to Happiness. I asked myself, “is there a shortcut to what we want?” and “why we are consistently in a search for shortcuts?” Listen on Apple Podcasts >>
